Ahead of the Regional Head Elections to be held on November 27, the Bali Zero Emissions Coalition, together with the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Udayana University and BaleBengong, held a Public Test for the 2024 Denpasar Mayoral Election with the theme “Democracy and Participation: Opening a Space for Dialogue Between Stakeholders and the Community” on Thursday (11/14/2024). This event aims to provide political education to first-time voters as well as a momentum to disseminate the importance of issues in the city of Denpasar.
Unlike public trials in general, this public trial carried the concept of no panelists and was dominated by academics. This session opened space for the community to observe, criticize, and understand the vision and mission of the mayoral candidates through live streaming that was widely accessible. Even though they were not physically present, the community could still convey their aspirations and questions through a link that had been distributed by the organizers.
The Bali Provincial Government has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, fifteen years earlier than the national government’s target. The political process and contestation in this year’s Bali regional elections, both at the provincial and city levels, are an opportunity for the public, including students and civil society organizations, to see, assess, and monitor whether the new leaders who will be elected have a commitment to climate change issues and support Bali’s target of net zero emissions by 2045.
